On the Franco-Swiss border between Meyrin (a Geneva county) and Saint-Genis-Pouilly (department of l’Ain), just a few kilometers from Geneva. The CERN has been a place for the physical research of particles since 1954: this international laboratory features an immense buried particle accelerator (LEP). With a circumference of 27 kilometers, it is the largest scientific instrument ever built on Earth! 3,000 scientists from all over the world study the basic particles in order to break through the secrets of nature.
In 1992, Georges Charpak received the Nobel Prize for Physics for work done at the CERN in 1968. The CERN has an important place in the development of certain information technologies. The most well-known is of course the World Wide Web.
The Notre Dame et Saint-André Church at Ferney-voltaire
This church, which was consecrated on November 8, 1826, is the largest Neo-classical religious building in the department of l’Ain. It was built on the initiative of Monsignor Devie, the 1st bishop of the Diocese of Belley. Just like the Castle, it is the 2nd building in the village to be classified a historic monument along with most of the furniture. The exceptional trompe-l’œil are worth the stop.

Ferney Pottery
de Ferney
In witness to fifteenth century Colovrex, the pottery workshops were, until recently, the main artisan activity in Ferney-Voltaire. Known locally for their domestic uses, the Ferney production is also nationally and internationally known thanks to the creations of its pottery masters, who taking advantage of the outlets offered by being close to Geneva, established in our territory in the 20th century. This permanent exhibit, located in the town hall, presents this rich creative heritage through three famous workshops: Hécler, Nicole and Bonifas.
