C.E.R.N. - European laboratory for particle physics

Situation :
the C.E.R.N. is located on both sides of the french-Swiss border and is divided between Pays de Gex and the Canton of Geneva. The visits proceed in the buildings of Meyrin, in Switzerland .

Visits : free guided tours are proposed all year round from Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to  2 PM on reservation (reservation 2 to 3 weeks in advance). The  visit duration  is 3 hours. Access though the A  entrance.
Free visit of the Microcosm exhibition from Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 5 :30 PM.
Information : 00 41 22 767 84 84 (Switzerland)
Web site : www.cern.ch

How to get there : signposts indicate the way to the CERN (Microcosm exhibition) which is in Meyrin, Switzerland.
The buildings are on the Swiss side, just after the customs of Saint-Genis-Pouilly/Meyrin.

Two underground rings of 7 and 27 km of circumference allow the course of the experiments. On the right of the picture, Switzerland, the lake Léman and the airport runways. On the left, Pays de Gex.

The CERN in a few words…

The CERN is the world’s largest research center in particle physics. Founded in 1954, the laboratory was one of Europe's first joint venturesand became a bright example of international collaboration. The CERN, of which convention constitutive had been signed at the origin by 12 countries, includes now 19 Member States.

The CERN employs a little less than 3000 people, covering a broad range of skills and trades - engineers, technicians, skilled workers, administrators, secretaries,…
World’s largest magnet, weighing more than the Eiffel tower, is at the CERN.
The experiments  have no equivalent in the history of sciences. Conceived and realized by hundreds of scientists, these experiments are often as bulky as houses. They are operated 24 hours a day during several months a year, and frequently last several years.
Some 6500 visiting scientists, half of the world's particle physicists, come to the CERN for their research. They represent 500 universities and over 80 nationalities .

The CERN at the origin of the WEB

The WWW was invented in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee, a computer specialist at CERN. It was originally designed for the community of high-energy physicists, working in large
international teams and needing to exchange information and data with universities and research institute all over the world the web now has millions of users as well in the academic area as in the commercial area.
