Bordering  Switzerland, the cantons of Vaud and Geneva, being next to the departments of Haute-Savoie and of Jura, Pays de Gex is a history-laden “land of borders”.
Today still, the status of free zone testifies to the importance and the extreme fragility of the border in Pays de Gex, which was integrated in the french kingdom only in 1601 by the treaty of Lyon.
