  Some ideas of visits in Pays de Gex-Bellegarde...

You will find in this page some suggestions of sites to be visited: museums, historic buildings, city tours… This does not claim to be an exhaustive list, and many other sites are open to  tourist visits. For more information, do not hesitate to contact  the tourist Offices  of Pays de Gex.

  Voltaire's castle

From 1758 to 1778, Voltaire developed in Ferney an ideal city, acting alternatly as farmer, architect, town planner and contractor.

Guided tours of the town of Ferney are organized every day of July and August (except Mondays), departure at 10 AM. Information : 04 50 28 09 16

Le Châteu de Voltaire

 Fort l'Ecluse

Natural gate of Pays de Gex, Fort l’Ecluse is a wonder fixed on the mountain. Built in the place of a strong house of 13 th century, demolished in 1590, then rebuilt, Fort l’Ecluse is today one of the most beautiful examples of fortification of the first half of 19th century. Composed by two forts connected by an underground staircase of more than 1000 steps cut in the rock, it had 35 pieces of artillery and a 500 men capacity.
This unique and unforgettable site is an invitation to a great travel through time...

 The historical tour of Gex

Gex has 700 years of history. From Freedoms of 1292 to the new districts of 1992, the urban fabric has deeply changed. Political capital, administrative and legal center, place of market and fair, Gex developed the multiple functions of a small capital of province.
The historical tour is an invitation to read this landscape, understanding the creation of a medieval village and to follow its extension related to the successive layouts of the road to Col de la Faucille. Throughout the route that curves through the streets of the town center, information points tell you all the history of Gex and its monuments…

 The museum of Pierres Fines - Mijoux

Present as of 18th century, very widespread during the 19th century, where it brought a complement of resources to farmers, the lapidairery, art to cut the gem stones, is not extinct.
The company Trabbia Vuillermoz, still in activity in Mijoux, is among the last to exert this trade made of patience and precision.
The company created a museum which makes it possible to discover the secrecies of its workshops and to contemplate the permanent exposure of minerals and rare pieces.

Open every day from 9 to 12 AM and from 2 to 7 PM. Closed Monday out of season.

 The firemen museum - Gex

The firemen museum is open every saturday from May 1 till October 30 from 9 to 12 AM and from 2 to 6 PM and every Wednesday fromJuly 1 till September 30 from 2 to 6 PM.
Reception of groups on request (minimum 20 people).
